It's All About Me!
Wow! The snow days and school delays really delayed our completing the Autobiography and Biography Unit. Second grade learned the characteristics of a biography and autobiography. They also learned where biographies are shelved in our library and the unique call number that our biographies have (92 followed by the last name of the person who the book is about).

The students then completed a simple timeline of their lives sharing a fact from the past, the present and a hope for the future. They then photographed the timeline and I uploaded the pictures to Voicethread. Voicethread is a web 2.0 tool that allows users to record their voices in response to an image. Click on the links below to view and listen to the children's timelines.

We are off to a great beginning!
We jumped right into our unit on Nonfiction Text. For September through October we delve into how nonfiction writers use various "text tools" to help us locate information. We expand our previous knowledge (from kindergarten and first grade lessons) to learn what the text tools are and how to use them. We practice how to use these text tools even before reading the book to help us understand the topic. This also helps us as we discuss and practice how to form our information "I Wonder" questions.

Our first set of lessons are guided and we work together to find text tools in print books and ebooks. Soon we will begin our mini-research project: Spiders.

Our text tools are:

  • Table of Contents
  • Special Fonts
  • Captions
  • Images (photos, drawings, maps, etc.)
  • Chapter Headings
  • Index
  • Glossary
  • Images with Labels
  • "Did You Know" boxes
